This mahzor is believed to have been written by Moshe ben Hayyim Akrish, who appears to have arrived in Italy following the Spanish expulsion of Jews in 1492. The matzoh’s pierced geometric pattern, and the head of bitter greens, are in pigments highlighted with shell gold.
